Kate in Waiting

5 min read

Hello bookworms! I hope you are doing well. I am doing yet another spotlight today! Kate in Waiting by Becky Albertalli is a fun Young Adult and though I did not end up reading it because of other commitments, I know many of you enjoy YA so I wanted to bring this one to your attention. In this post, like with The Lore of Prometheus, you will find information about the book and author. I will also be linking and quoting some of my favorite reviews of the book. If you reviewed and loved this one, do pop your link in my comments so that others can find it easily. 🙂 Let’s get started!

Kate in Waiting

by Becky Albertalli

Kate in Waiting by Becky Albertalli

Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Synopsis:

Contrary to popular belief, best friends Kate Garfield and Anderson Walker are not codependent. Carpooling to and from theater rehearsals? Environmentally sound and efficient. Consulting each other on every single life decision? Basic good judgment. Pining for the same guys from afar? Shared crushes are more fun anyway.

But when Kate and Andy’s latest long-distance crush shows up at their school, everything goes off script. Matt Olsson is talented and sweet, and Kate likes him. She really likes him. The only problem? So does Anderson.

Turns out, communal crushes aren’t so fun when real feelings are involved. This one might even bring the curtains down on Kate and Anderson’s friendship.

Content Notes (see full list on Book Trigger Warnings) include depiction of underage drinking, bully, coarse language.

Some reviews of Kate in Waiting

  • Contemporary YA is not her usual genre either and still Ellie from Read to Ramble Blog gave this book 4 stars. She even has an audio recording for the review so do check out her blog! Her analysis of themes is super detailed and this is one of the most thorough reviews I have read.

High school: I mentioned above that this was a setting that was really well done and it is definitely one of the best high school environments that I’ve read in books. While there is the mention of bullying, it’s not front and centre, which can sometimes be hard for me to read, so I appreciated not getting bombed with it – while of course it is important to talk about. What really came to the forefront was the importance of friendship and just generally teenagers going through life and having to jump over hurdles. Nothing is ever as you expect and life is always easier when you have a badass, cool, fun and caring group of friends by your side.

  • Marta from Monogamist Reader loved this book so much that inspite of the imperfections of the story, she would read Becky Albertalli’s works again.

Becky Albertalli has this talent in describing the realism of teenage crushes, when you spend hours examining every single eye movement, word, gesture… who didn’t do that? It is a sweet light story about discovering love and platonic relationships. I simply love it and if you loved her previous works, you will need to get a copy of this book.

  • It is so much fun to find books for which we are not the targeted audience. They are unique gems that we hold close to us. Alice from Alice and Her Bookshelf found this to be such a book.

All of the characters within the novel were very well thought out and I just know I would have loved to read this one when I was younger. The example it sets for diversity in YA novels is amazing and I would love to read more novels that feel so inclusive.

  • Steph from Bookslovereaders is a massive fan of Becky Albertalli and she enjoyed this book as well!

It has all the teenage angst I remember when I was that age – its been a while. I am a fan of Becky Albertalli as she has a way with making her characters relatable and likeable. I mean I do like them all but Noah has to be my favourite out of everyone. There is something about him that is sweet and kind and I know he has a thing for Kate from the minute we met him.

  • Delly from Delly Bird found familial connections with this book, bringing back memories of her time as a teenager in high school.

Becky does a brilliant job capturing the teenage voice and high school experience. Teen me definitely identifies with Kate! The overthinking, shyness, fitting in but still feeling like an outsider half of the time…. Being a teenager is hard! We are sent on an emotional rollercoaster with the Kate-Anderson-Matt triangle. The dynamic between Anderson and Kate is very well written. They are put in a really tricky, friendship-testing situation and I feel for both of them. I love that the most important relationship in this book is a platonic one.
